This is the best date in this short series. Don't try and complete Victoria first, whatever you do.
Issued for Malta as their "grano" was 3 to a farthing. Allow me to demonstrate the elegance of predecimal maths: there's 3 of these to a farthing, so 12 to a penny. Thus, there's 144 to a shilling, and 2,880 to the pound. There were 576,000 pieces minted = £200 on the nail. Scarce date
1871 is rated R in ESC
These are very attractive little coins when they're this good.
Lovely mature lustre and very little wear to speak of. Top quality material I think you'll agree.
I have all sorts of fun collecting Victorian silver by Davies number. There's so much more to find than just doing straight date runs. Seven different types for 1887, for starters.
The trickiest of the three varieties of the 1889, and if you're going for completion, you've got to have all three. ESC doesn't differentiate the three variants, and refers to all 1889s as Scarce
It's quite easy to find low grade examples of these, but once you start getting up to this level, they are becoming quite serious coins.
Peck says Very Scarce. Freeman says R8. I say this one's much better than most you'll see.
