Initially recognised by Ernest Bramah, in his 1929 publication "A guide to the varieties and rarity of English regal copper coins: Charles II-Victoria, 1671-1860".  Bramah catalogued the variety as No. 25c, and described it as Rare.

The distinguishing features of this die are the shallow feature to the right of the join between the two loops of the 8 and the little tooth within the lower loop.
